Favorite Spots

Some are near, some are far, but these are the best we've found travelling around Japan.

1. Hirado Island, Nagasaki-ken: the beaches are turquoise though shallow. Two hour drive West of Imari. You can camp on the beach for free, but get there before jellyfish season in July/August.
2. Kirishima National Park, where Kagoshima, Kumamoto, and Miyazaki meet: great camping and the best hikes we've found on Kyushu proper.
3. Miyajima, Hiroshima-ken: a magical place despite the tourists. You definitely don't want to miss it.
4. Kuju/Aso National Park: some of the best landscape I've seen in Japan. It reminds me of a less rocky Scotland.
5. Nanayama, Saga-ken: cute town, great waterfall and a rope swing too.
6. Saga-city, Saga-ken: just kidding.
